Daniel Bonn Salk

Salk's parents were Harris and Sophia from Russia who were clothing manufacturers. Salk married Dora Press December 21, 1912 in Manhattan, New York. Together they had three sons, Dr. Jonas Edward Salk the inventor of the polio vaccine, Dr Herman Maurice Salk a veterinarian and Dr Lee Salk a child psychologist. He passed away in 1959 at the age of 69.

NY Times, November 26, 1959. "Daniel Salk Dies at 69. Father of Dr. Jonas E. Salk was a blouse designer. Daniel Salk of 35 West Ninety-second Street, father of Dr Jonas E. Salk, who developed the widely used anti-poliomyelitis vaccine, died yesterday at the Hospital for Joint Diseases. He was 69 years old. Mr. Salk, a former designer of women's neckwear and blouses, retired in 1951 after having suffered a back injury. His death resulted from a heart attack following a back operation. Mr. Salk and his wife, the former Dora Press, were named as "Jewish Parents of the Year" in 1955 by the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. He is survived also by two other sons, Herman of Palm Springs, Calif., a veterinarian and Lee of New York, a clinical psychologist; a brother, three sisters, and seven grand children."
