Daniel Sheldon Jr. was born in Washington, Connecticut, the son of Charlotte Judson Sheldon and Dr. Daniel Sheldon. Sheldon attended the Litchfield Law School in 1796.

In 1799, upon his graduation of law school, Daniel Sheldon went to Washington, D.C. and worked as a clerk at the United States Department of Treasury with Oliver Wolcott, and was auditor when Washington was burned in 1814.

In 1816, Sheldon went to Paris with Albert Gallatin. Sheldon was commissioned Secretary of Legation, April 3rd 1816 and acted as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim from July 18th to October 6th 1817; from August 12th to October 27th 1818; and from May 10th1823, to March 30th 1824.

Daniel Sheldon, Jr. contracted a respiratory disease and died in Marseilles on April 14th 1828 at the age of 48 years old. He was laid to rest next to his younger half-brother, William; who had died in 1826.

Note: Daniel Sheldon, Jr.'s dress sword that he wore while serving in Paris is now an exhibit in the historic DAR exhibit in the Litchfield Museum, Litchfield, Connecticut.
