Danielle (5), was shot in the forehead and passed away in the ambulance on the way to hospital, on 20th December 2006.

Danielle along with her family - parents Diederick and Anel, brother Andrico, and friend Ferdi Kleinhans, were fishing at Riebeeck Lake, Randfontein, when a group of armed men opened fire. As bullets rained on the Esterhuizen family, one hit Danielle in the forehead as she lay in her mother's arms. The bullet first grazed her mother's finger.

  • Judge Halima Saldulker sentenced David Mpho Ngomane (33), Tsakane Sithole (27), and Thabang Joseph Jane (26), to life sentence each for the murder.
  • The three were also each sentenced to 18 years for attempting to kill Ferdinand Kleynhans - the Esterhuizens' family friend.
  • They were further sentenced to a collective sentence of 15 years for attempting to kill the Esterhuizens, including their two-year-old son Andrique.
