Darryl Kempster (1967 - 2004)

Brief overview:

Darryl (37), a British citizen and member of the Lord of the Dance troupe, was shot dead on June 27th 2004 while walking from the Nelson Mandela Theatre to the Parktonian Hotel in Braamfontein. He was shot dead in front of the cast and crew as he entered a hotel in which they were staying. His laptop and bag were stolen.

Mr Kempster had worked as merchandising executive for Unicorn Entertainment, which produces Lord Of The Dance.

The troupe had been returning to the hotel on Saturday night after a sell-out performance in a neighbouring venue. Its final two performances in Johannesburg, were cancelled.

  • The man charged with robbing and killing last year was acquitted in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday. Police spokesperson Chris Wilken said 23-year-old Zimbabwean Jabulani Moyo was released on Monday after Judge Phillipa Kruger found him not guilty. In her judgment, she said she could not say beyond reasonable doubt that Moyo did rob and kill Darryl Kempster in June last year. She said there was a discrepancy between the identity kit police drew up and Moyo's physical appearance.
