Darryll Curt Werner (1960 - 1998)

Brief overview:

Darryll (38), a well-known stunt man, dare devil and race car driver, was shot dead by carjackers on his neighbours property, in Mulbarton, on 22nd May 1998.

Darryll's wife, Charmaine, said, "He went closer, and the men started shooting at him. He fired shots himself, but only after he was shot." She ran out and found her husband bleeding in the street. According to Charmaine, Darryll was shot in the liver and stomach.

With the help of neighbours, Darryll was taken to the Mulbarton clinic where he passed away.

Their neighbour, Joaquim de Sousa Oliveira had parked his BMW 3 series at the house as he was visiting relatives, said police spokesman Insp. Mark Reynolds. Three armed men attacked him, forced him to the ground and took his watch, mobile phone and shoes. After the shooting the carjackers were driving away in his car. According to Reynolds, two police officers chased the vehicle. After a shoot-out, the men stopped. One of the suspects was shot in the chest and leg. A second was taken into custody and the third perpetrator managed to flee.

Charmaine said that it was ironic that Darryll performed life-threatening stunts every day, and he died in a similar way.

Three more carjackings were reported in Johannesburg that weekend. Gavin Patrick Fitzgerald from Bramley was shot dead when three men tried to carjack his BMW 540i the night before, Reynolds said.

In another incident, a Nigerian, Mr. Frank Dinneyx, was shot dead when he and a friend were attacked by five armed men on an off-ramp in Randburg . When Dinneyx's Mercedes wouldn't start, the carjackers assaulted Dinneyx and his friend. Dinneyx was shot is in the head.

Keith Alexander (67), was shot in the back and a suspected carjacker wounded when a shout-out ensued in Orange Farm when they wanted to steal his Volkswagen Golf. The Alexander couple were in their driveway at the time. Alexander and the injured suspect are in stable condition
