The Galveston Daily News published the following on March 3, 1875: The Dallas Herald obtained an obituary on Col. Darwin M. Stapp from the pen of Col. J. Henry Brown, an old friend. He says__ with his parents and their family, he came to Southwest Texas from Palmyra, Missouri, forty-five years ago. D.M. Stapp was a soldier in 1835 in the battles around San Antonio, and also in 1836 and 1837, and for some years was a gallant defender of the frontier. For six years - 1849 to 1855 - he was a useful and honorable member of the Legislature. Since then he has been Customhouse Officer for Matagorda Bay. He was also a member of the Secession Convention, and signed the ordnance of secession.
