About David Adams

David W. Adams, 85 PORTLAND- David W. Adams, 85, real estate investor, passed away on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at a local hospital surrounded by his family.

He had lived in Portland since 1966. Mr. Adams was born in Syracuse, N.Y. to Isaac Dewey Adams and Elise DeCamp Pitzkie. He was raised in Rome, N.Y. by his paternal grandparents after the early death of his mother. He often noted that having been raised by Victorians synchronized his values to an earlier generation. Adams attended Syracuse University on the GI Bill after serving in the Army Air Force during World War II. He graduated with a degree in Business and went to work for Beneficial Finance in Rome, N.Y. in 1947. He married Carolyn Jesseman of Concord, N.H. in 1950. He had successive jobs in banking in Concord, N.H., and Herkimer and Arcade N.Y. before moving to Portland in 1966.

In Portland he briefly worked as a loan officer and then as Comptroller for Pinecap before giving up the field of finance. David Adams worked in banking in the days when loans were afforded as much on the measure of a man as on the feasibility of numbers on a page. Adams' instinctive understanding of people allowed him to make quick and generally accurate judgments, but he chafed under rules made by others and decided in 1967 to go into business for himself. With the assistance of his wife, he bought, sold and managed apartment buildings for the remainder of his career.

In 1972 he bought a cabin in Friendship, coming closer to his childhood dream of being a lighthouse keeper. A fourth-generation Freemason, he often headed out in a dory to fish with fellow Mason and curmudgeon, Jake Overlock for silence and Jake's recitations of the Masonic ritual. Mr. Adams was a voracious reader of history and biography even after poor eyesight required him to use Talking Books. He loved breakfast out with friends and family and a good joke, although he never could remember the punch line.
