David Russell Arnold

David Arnold, baptised 4 Oct 1821 at Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire, UK, wed Sarah Russell on 23 June 1842 at St Andrews the Less, Cambridge, and died 17 Dec 1877 at Kangadaraar Creek, Victoria, Australia. David and Sarah had three sons born at Cambridge, William John Arnold 13 Jan 1843, wed Sarah Cundall and David Russell Arnold born 21 May 1845 wed Rosanna Wilson in a joint wedding on 25 Jan 1871. Frank died 3 Dec 1877 aged 24 years, of acute pneumonia. His father David died two weeks later, on 17 Dec 1877, of Chronic Bronchitis. The family of five came to Australia on the Startled Fawn, arriving at Melbourne 31 Oct 1856. David's two brothers, Thomas 18, and Charles 16 accompanied them. John was born 16 Jan 1859 at California Gully, Vic, Aust and died of acute pneumonia 19 Nov 1876 aged 17. The family is buried at the Tarnagulla Cemetery. Gold was discovered at Tarnagulla in such quantities that stone crushers and bayyeries were set up. Later gold was also discovered at Inglewood, and the rich quartz was taken to Tarnagulla to be processed - a long and tedious trip. There were no gold crushing machines at Inglewood and the miners had to transport their rock east towards Bridgewater so as to cross the Bullabul creek, then they would head for the crushing machines at Tarnagulla. David Arnold decided to shortern the journey and had a track blazed through the forest having a 'three log with decking bridge built however this bridge was swept away by a flood. Arnold then spent 100 pounds building another bridge to the south and charged a toll of sixpence so as to recover his costs. A load of wool drawn by 6 horses is said to be the first to cross the bridge and the coaches from Talbot, Castlemaine, Dunolly and Inglewood used it also. David Arnold also owned land near what was later to become Arnold's bridge Railway Station. This crossing became known as Arnold's Bridge, although the area was known as Kangderaar Creek. in 1890 the Post Office officially changed the area name. Today it is the small town (village) of Arnold. The floods of 1878 washed away the bridge approaches, it was again repaired in March 1908 and April 1913. The current concrete bridge was erected after the bushfire of 17 January 1965. This fire also killed Allan James McKean (he wed one of David Russell Arnold's grand-daughters, Ruby Arnold).

This is the last Will and Testament of me David Arnold made this sixteenth day of December one thousand eight hundred and seventy seven as follows. I give devise and bequeath all my Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments and all my household furniture real money goods and chattels and all other my real and personal Estate and effects whatsoever unto my dear wife during the term of her life and after her decease to be equally divided between my two sons respectively William John Arnold and David Russell Arnold and her heirs executors administrators and assigns to and for her and their own absolute use and benefit according to the nature and benefit thereof respectively subject only to the payment of my just funeral and testamentary expenses and the charges of proving this my Will. And I appoint my said wife Executor of this my said Will.

William John Arnold William John Arnold, born at Cambridge 13 Jan 1843, died at Arnold's Bridge, Vic on 5 May 1896 aged 53, of pneumonia following influenza. He wed 25 Jan 1871 at Tarnagulla C of E to Sarah Cundall, born in Yorkshire 1853 died 21 Nov 1930 aged 77, daughter of Hannah Rockett and John Cundall.

Sarah wed (2) to Henry Edward Cockayne, called Edward, and she died at Eaglehawk.

In 1981, when I checked up on the cousins, I found William and Sarah's 10 children had given them 38 grandchildren, 107 great grandchildren and 177 g'g'grandchildren. We are now tracing the sixth and onward generation bearing the Arnold Surname. I have no idea how many carry forward the Arnold surname. I know Albert's Wesley has a son Bruce John with a son David John - the ninth in the line of Arnolds. Write to Elizabeth and tell me if I left you out. 1.
