Mr. Barnes was born July 24, 1925, in Rochester, Minn., to Dr. Arlie Ray and Blanche Storey Barnes. He graduated from Duke University in 1949, where he met his wife, Mary, and earned a master's degree in hospital administration in 1951. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, serving as president for one year. He served in the Navy for two years in the Medical Corp in the South Pacific during World War II.

Mr. Barnes worked as administrator in the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for 38 years, serving on the Mayo Board of Governors, Board of Trustees, and the Mayo Foundation. He also served on the Rochester Methodist Hospital of Directors. He retired to Pinehurst in 1987. He was an avid golfer and shot his age at 74. In Pinehurst he served on the board of FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, including two years as chairman of the board.
