BIOGRAPHY:
After moving to Honesdale with his family in 1914, David attended Honesdale High School, where he was captain and center of the 1916-17 basketball team (photo in "The Wayne Independent," 28 May 1969). He worked in the family car dealership, Boyd Bros. He wanted to enlist early for World War I, but bowed to family pressure to stay home, since his older brother, Bob, had enlisted. He did enlist, and on 14 Aug 1918, departed for training at Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh. He was accompanied by his future wife's brother, Andrew Ervin Morrison, who died of influenza at Pittsburgh two months later. (David's letters of Oct 1918 provide a good description of measures taken to prevent the spread of influenza during the epidemic.) On 15 Oct 1918, David arrived at Camp Jackson, SC, and was assigned to the 5th Prov. Battery (later Battery F), 12th Regt, 4th Brigade (apparently part of the Field Artillery Replacement Division), as a private and truck driver. The war ended while he was at Camp Jackson. His discharge is recorded at the Wayne County Courthouse in Misc. Book 7, p.282.
Several letters home suggest that David had an imperious nature. For example, on 22 Sep 1918, he wrote: "I wish Edna would wrap up that Army coat that Bob sent home and send it to me at once... P.S. Be sure and send that at once." He made several demands and remonstrated with the folks for not writing more, but the word "please" was rarely used. He insisted that he be kept up to date on the situation at the garage, asking for a report on the stock of tires and emphasizing that the bills were to be paid promptly. He became service manager of Boyd Bros. after his return.
After his wife's death in 1922, he left the raising of his son up to his parents and sister. He had a bout with tuberculosis in the 1940s, but continued to smoke. no military service mentioned...no dates...no units... in the 1930 census david canfield boyd, now a widower, is living in the household of his parents...
