Cohen, David (1818–1902)
News has been received from London in a private cablegram of the death of Mr. David Cohen, at the age of 83 years. For 45 years he has resided in London as the representative of the firm of David Cohen and Co., one of the oldest of our most important business firms. With the late Mr. Samuel Cohen, father of Mr. G. J. Cohen, and the late Hon. L. W. Levy, M.L.C., he founded the business in the year 1839, being an amalgamation of the businesses of the partners having a prior existence of several years. Old mercantile men will remember the magnificent premises erected by the firm in the early 50's in West Maitland, where as well as in Sydney they carried on business which was afterwards extended to Tamworth and Newcastle. Mr. Cohen has revisited his partners and the State on several occasions since permanently taking up his residence in England, the last visit being about nine years ago. In London he was well known for the interest he took in and the support he gave to various charities, and for his readiness to assist deserving objects. He leaves a large family, his sons including Messrs. Neville D. Cohen and B. D. Cohen, of Sydney, Mr. Henry D. Cohen, of Brisbane, and one son and three daughters in London, his eldest daughter being the wife of Mr. B. W. Levy, late Lord Mayor of Liverpool, England. The establishments of the firm were closed yesterday in consequence of Mr. Cohen's death.
