GEDCOM Note
These dates came from the book "The Durst & Darst Families of America" by Sanford Charles Gladden, published in 1969. This book is in the Auburn, WA library & Heritage Quest library. I also have a copy. Additional information about David S.H.H. Darst was gotten at San Antonia Gen. & Hist. Library in San Antonio, TX and the Gonzales Archives in Gonzales, TX. This was acquired on our trip in February 1997.
He was a very active man, making and losing several fortunes. He started the paper in Gonzales, TX. During the Civil War he was appointed Deputy Marshal of his district for the Confederate States. He was ruined financially at the close of the war, but later started a hotel which was successful. He then erected a mill and gin which also was successful.
