David Hamilton is the bastard son of John Hamilton, Abbot of Paisley and Archbishop of St. Andrews. He had a letter of legitimation under the Great Seal of Scotland on 20 April 1580: Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, A. D. 1546-1580, charter number 3002 on page 824 According to the late John Anderson, his mother is Grizel Semple, the daughter of Robert, Lord Semple. Hamilton Memoirs, page 235
