  • On 1 June 1809, Governor Tompkins of New York appointed David Hammond to be an associate justice for Sullivan County. From page 320 of Chester, Alden, ed. Legal and Judicial History of New York. Volume III. New York: National Americana Society, 1911.

    • "Soon after the act to organize Sullivan as a county became a law, David Hammond built a part of what is now the Mansion House. This building has been owned by him, Stephen Hamilton (his son-in-law)...". (page 562)
    • On 16 November 1832 David was appointed county treasurer of Sullivan County. (page 692)
    • On 6 March 1815, David Hammond was elected Sheriff of Sullivan County, New York. He was again elected sheriff on November 1825. (page 694).

    • "WHO BUILT THE GEN. NIVEN HOUSE?
    • "Mrs. Frank E. Gerhaghty, of Monticello, furnishes the Watchman the following information in regard to the General A.C. Niven residence, which is now being carted away and converted into material for bungalows at Sackett Lake.
    • "Mrs. Geraghty says that her great-grandfather, David Hammond, built the Niven place and sold it to Gen. A.C. Niven. He also built the Lefferts place. John P. Jones never lived on the Niven place or owned it, she says.
    • "David Hammond died Sept. 26, 1834, at the age of seventy years. Prior to 1834 he must have built the Niven house, which would make it well over one hundred years old."
