About David Jane
Killed while crossing R.R. ∼Member of International Order of Odd Fellows. Engineer, Died due to injuries sustained in a railroad accident, leaving a wife and two living children. Son of Edmund Jane.
Accident No. 11. - A fatal accident occurred on the railway between No. 4 and 5 shafts, Calumet mine, April 22nd, which resulted in the death of David Jane, engineer. Deceased attempted to cross the railway track when the engine was not more than ten or twelve feet from him. The engine was going slowly at the time, and had not the deceased stumbled and fell, undoubtedly he would have crossed the track safely.
An inquest was held before Coroner Sowden.
Several witnesses testified that they were satisfied his stumbling was the cause of the accident, as there was nothing on the track that would cause him to fall. In falling, his legs were across the rail and his body outside the track. The wheels of the engine passed over his legs. The locomotive was at once stopped and the unfortunate man was taken to the mine hospital, where he died soon after.
The jury returned the following verdict: “We, the jury, find that David Jane came to his death by accidentally falling in front of a locomotive, between No. 2 man car engine-house and the Superior engine-house, Calumet mine, April 22nd, 1898."
