John Lamb baptized 9 Jul. 1721
Sarah Lamb baptized 6 May 1722

Lemuel Lamb b 5 Nov. 1738

A Stonington, CT deed dated 14 Oct. 1719, from Joseph Lamb to David Lamb, states whereas John Lamb, father of the parties, by his last will and testament dated 12 May 1703, bequeathed to Joseph and David his whole farm in Stonington to be equally divided between them when they should become of age, and whereas ye Joseph and David have mutually agreed to divide, Joseph quit-claims all ye northmost or northwest part of ye farm to David, beginning .... Witnessed by C. Christopher and Sarah Christopher. (Stonington, CT Deeds, Births, Marriages, Deaths, and Ear Markings; Vol. 3, Pg 325-6 (first book on roll), Family History Library film 005593)

The will of David's father, John Lamb, of Stonington, dated 12 May 1703, names three sons, John, Joseph and David. David was only about five years old (born ca 1698) at that time. By the codicil Joseph and David received all the lands on the west side of the brook and their older brother, John, received the part on the east side of the brook.

The will of David Lamb of Stonington, New London Co., CT, was dated 6 Jul 1771, and was proven 5 Nov. 1771. Its provisions: To wife Esther Lamb; to sons Lemuel and John all lands and buildings after decease or second marriage of wife; to grandson, David Baldwin, clothing; to grandchildren: David, Joseph, Nathan and Asa Baldwin, and Thankfull Brown, Abigail, Sarah, Lucy, and Rebecca Baldwin; dau Sarah Baldwin, deceased; to dau, Lucy Wheeler. Freedom to negro Betty six months after his death; and freedom of his other negroes at age 25; grandson David Lamb, son of Lemuel Lamb silver shoe buckles; son Lemuel Lamb and friend Seth Smith, executors. Wit: John Kimbal, Joseph Yarrington, Abel Yarington; signed: David Lamb. The inventory was dated 21 Oct 1771. It totaled 1050-18-13 pounds.

At the time of David's will his first child, John, and his daughter Sarah Baldwin were deceased. Living and named in the will were Lemuel, John (fourth child), and Lucy. In his will he accounted for all of his children.

At the side of his gravestone is a field stone carved "T L" that must identify the burial place of David's first wife, Thankful. The cemetery contains several other graves marked with field stones.

Notes

David died 17 Sept. 1771, in the 74 year of his age. That means his age was 73 and that he was living in his 74th year but had not yet attained age 74. So David was born in 1698 (1771 less 73). That helps to confirm that he was David, son of John Lamb, baptized in April 1699.

David Lamb d 17 Sept. 1771, is often listed as having been born in Norwich or Litchfield, CT in 1693, and as having died on 17 Sept. 1771 in Norwich, CT. This overlooks his baptism record and the fact, per his gravestone, that he was 73 years old at the time of his death (not 78 years old). It overlooks that David Lamb d 17 Sept. 1771 was of Stonington, and that he is buried in Stonington (now North Stonington).

David Lamb d 17 Sept. 1771, is listed as having died in Norwich and having surviving children who were not named in his will. This overlooks the content of his will and, among other sources, that David resided in Stonington as evidenced by his will. It apparently co-mingles his children with children of another Lamb who may have resided in Norwich, CT.

David Lamb is sometimes connect to a John Lamb of Springfield, MA. That overlooks all of the information documenting David Lamb of and in Stonington. Regarding Springfield, it is interesting to note that the following appeared in a Boston Transcript in 1932:

"Burt's Springfield History is in error in stating that two of the sons of John Lamb of Springfield went to Stonington. All remained in vicinity of Springfield."
