About David L. Mahoney
David L. Mahoney, a Little Falls businessman, who was active in community affairs for more than 40 years, died on April 10, 2015. He was 86 years old. He had lived in New Hartford for several years before moving to Greenwich, Connecticut. Mr. Mahoney was graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Little Falls, in 1946, and then from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in 1950. After serving in the Navy from 1950 until 1955, he joined his father, Leo D. Mahoney, in the insurance and real estate agency known as Mahoney & Mahoney, Inc. He retired from the business in 1991; it was continued as Read Financial Group, Inc.; now Day, Scarafile & Read, Inc. His mother was Jane Reardon Mahoney, also a native of Little Falls. Both his grandfathers were Irish saloon-keepers in Little Falls in the early 1900s. In 1955, he married Janemarie McEvilly. She died in 2012. He is survived by their three children: Daniel and his partner, Thomas Owens, of Palm Springs, California; Ellen Mahoney Floyd and her husband, Mark, of Greenwich, Connecticut; and William and his wife, Marie, of Richmond, Virginia. His grandchildren are Emily and William Floyd, and Maxwell and Maura Mahoney. While in college, Mr. Mahoney was president of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. At various times, he served as president or chairman of Little Falls Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, St. Mary's Parish Council, Herkimer County Legislature, Herkimer County Community College and Little Falls Hospital. He was the first president of Little Falls Community Chest, and later served as president of Eastern Herkimer County Industries, Inc., the area industrial development corporation. He had also been a board member of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Utica/Watertown, Central New York Health Systems Agency, and Mohawk Valley Network, the healthcare affiliation. In 1977, he earned an MBA degree from Syracuse University. Over many years, he worked as an adjunct instructor at area colleges. Mr. Mahoney had been a member of Cedar Lake Club and the Utica Curling Club. He had planned that his remains be donated to an anatomical gift program. A memorial service will be held in May. For those considering memorial gifts, Thea Bowman House, 731 Lafayette Street, Utica, is suggested. Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY, (315) 823-2424, under the direction of Harry J. and Kevin E. Enea, Funeral Directors.
