Family oral history states that David Maple rode with Jesse and Frank James and shot and though he killed someone. He fled with his family, in the middle of the night, to Jerseyville, IL and took his middle name as his last name. He later found out that the man he shot did not die, and moved back to Southern Missouri.
Jerseyville, IL is located just south of Carrollton, IL, where the famous photos of Jesse and Frank James were take. Frank and Jesse were visiting Col. Fulkerson who lived between Jerseyville and Carrollton on his Hazel Dell homestead.
A grandson of David told this historian, that the James gang would come stay with them when he was visiting the area and that he had photos of them with various family members. Famously, when Jesse was asked what he was doing in the area, he replied "Banking Business".
