About David James Motley

He was a Revolutionary War soldier and served in Company B, 38th Regiment Military Service, Amelia County, VA. (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 2, p 368).
He was in Howard's Continental line behind Pickens' Militia and ahead of Washington's Cavalry along the Green River Road at the Battle of Cowpens. His uncle, David Ellington, Jr., stated that the two of them were together in campaigns and that David was wounded in the leg at Guilford Courthouse. (The Patriots at Cowpens, by Bobby G. Moss).

Will of Joseph Motley, father of David James Motley.
DAVID MOTLEY being weak in body but of sound mind.
To my beloved wife ELIZABETH MOTLEY one hundred pounds also lend her during her natural life the land and plantation where I now live and negros: Primor, Will, Mat, Hannah and children, livestock, furniture and a London still.
The remainder of my estate to be divided into eleven parts to: my grand daughter PATSEY MOTLEY (daughter of David Motley), son DANIEL MOTLEY, son SAMUEL MOTLEY, son JOHN MOTLEY, and to MARTHA STEWART'S four children one part, daughter OBEDIENCE MOREHEAD one part, to daughter PRUDENCE STORE one part, to daughter SALLY ANDERSON one part, to my daughter AMEY CARTER lend her one part during her lifetime then to her children; to my daughter DELILAH TERRY one part, to my grandson JOSEPH MOTLEY TANNER, should he die without issue to his two brothers JOEL TANNER and ASA TANNER.
At the death of my wife what has been lent to her to be divided to the legatees above named in the manner.
