Biography

David Provoost was one of New Amsterdam's Dutch burghers, and the father of David Provost (or David Provoost) who later became the 24th Mayor of New York City from 1699 to 1700. The family resided on Pearl Street, near Fulton Street, in New York, New York.

David was born November 20, 1642 in Fort Good Hope, (located in Hartford County Connecticut). He is the son of David Provoost and Margaretta Grietje Gillis TAN WAART

He was born November 20, 1642 in Fort Good Hope, Connecticut --- Fort Goede Hoop as the Dutch called it. Hartford now sits on the site of the old Dutch Fort Good Hope. The Dutch explorer, Adriaen Block first visited the area in 1614 and as early as 1623 a colony, Fort Goede Hoop, had been established. Rev Hooker created the colony of Hertford (now Hartford) near the fort in 1636.
