The records we have for David Phillips came from research done by Hilbet Fletcher while searching for information on Joseph Carr. Both men's records can be found in the DAR library. Information was also gathered from descendents of David and Mary phillips and from family Bibles.

The following is an email from Richard Ripley:

Here's an update on David Phillips (1714-abt 1800), the member of the NC Militia in 1776. As I looked over the names of others in this unit, it seemed to me likely that he had a connection with Clemmon Phillips and others in that unit. I recently finished an analysis of Clemmon, whereby he must arguably be the son of Sheriff Etheldred Phillips (1716-1795). Similarly, David must be attached to this family line, though he can't be a son of Etheldred. You know, Clemmon had ALSO been attached previously as a child of Reuben, but this could not be correct. Similarly, as you point out, David cannot be the son of Reuben, but is in the same family as Clemmon and Etheldred.

In his pension application of 1833, when he was 79 years old, made from Jackson County, but referring back to his service in NC, he makes reference to his mother being 'Mrs. Elizabeth Tomlin'. No one has ever been able to trace this. But I think I have found the answer. His father was Philip Phillips, born May 9, 1714 in Devon, England. His mother was Elizabeth Bendall, born February 27, 1733, also in Devon. They were married June 29, 1746 in Devon, Their first son Richard was born August 10, 1749 in Devon, He came to America and married Elizabeth Waddy in Virginia in 1788. The family had to have come to Virginia from Devon between 1749 and 1755, then to North Carolina, with several others of their family.

This family followed the family of Etheldred Phillips; they came from Devon and settled in Virginia, with many other famous pioneer families, like the Sumners and the Exums and Battles and Lewis, and then moved on to North Carolina, where David was born in 1755.

I have to say, this case is highly probable, but circumstantial, based largely on known lineages of others of the NC line who applied for pensions at about the same time.

The evidence indicates that David's father died in about 1800, and his mother returned to Devon, where there is a record of her marriage on April 18, 1802, to John Tamlyn. John Was born 1735 in Devon, and Elizabeth (Bendall) Phillips was born 1733 in Devon - thus she was 69 years old, a widow, for this marriage, and thus is reported as 'Mrs. Elizabeth Tomlin (Tamlyn) by her son David Phillips, 31 years after her remarriage, when he applied for the pension in Jackson County.

This fits into the big picture because Philip Phillips, the father of David, was the son of Etheldred Phillips and Elizabeth Kelland, married 1710 in Devon. This Etheldred was the father of Sheriff Etheldred Phillips (born June 1, 1716 in Devon, died May 9, 1795 in Edgecomb County, NC) (settled first in Virginia, recorded as Sheriff of Edgecomb County in 1793, and more about him is found in my web site and CD.

So... I am going to change David Phillips from son of Reuben to son of Phillip, and cousin to Sherriff Etheldred, with whose son, Clemmon Phillips, he served in the NC line during the Revolutionary War. This will appear on the web site and CD. We'll see if any other cousins get in touch. Meanhile, the file is still open, and I will keep looking.

Sources: Title: Latter Day Saints Genealogy Records Author: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Publication: internet, October 2000 and later. Repository: Call Number: Media: Other Text: (This posting of David's birth involves circumstantial evidence, as noted here). David's birth, as son of Reuben Phillips & Catherine Howard, is reported in an IGI record, with the location given as Caswell, North Carolina. This presents difficulties as David is not mentioned in biographical material found in this family tree, for the children of Reuben Phillips, and the location of David's birth is in conflict with the location for other known children of Reuben. In another record, reporting the same date and location, on film # 2034554, but with only a mother reported, Mrs. Elizabeth Tomlin. The widow of Philips Phillips returned to Devon, England, and married there, in 1802, John Tomlyn. I believe this is David's mother, and that David is son of Philip Phillips, who was in North Carolina with his brother Etheldred, at the time of David's birth. David's military service with the NC line, fits with service shown for others in this family, and also for Clemmon Phillips, a cousin, found in the family tree.
