About David Potter

David Potter. He joined the continental army, went AWOL and hid out in North Carver, MA with a young school teacher named Deborah Sampson about whom a book was written (America's First Woman Patriot). She shamed him into rejoining the battle and joined up with him disguising herself as a man. After the war, David married Elizabeth Vaughn of E. Greenwich, RI. She was related to the Richmond family. They and William Richmond and his family moved to Salisbury, NY.

In 1916 five of William Richmond's children went with their families to Switzerland County, IN where they started extensive clans. With them were two of David Potter's children - Benjamin FRanklin Potter who was married to Annis Richmond and Catherine Potter who was married to George Richmond. Other Richmond siblings who went were Rachel, Lawton, John and Orrin. Most of them are buried either in the Bovard Cemetary and the Allensville Cemetary in Switzerland County, IN. The Richmonds settled in Allensville and the Potters in East Enterprise which are only a couple of miles apart. In New York the Richmonds lived in Fairfield which is likewise just down the road from Salisbury.
