About David Sandry (Saunter) Sonter - Free Settler "Maitland" 1838

Original spelling of surname: SAUNTEN, SAUNTER, SOUTER or SOUNTER. David and Emma sailed from Gravesend 24 June1838 on board the 'Maitland' with their 5 children. The voyage lasted four and a half months during which their 7 year old daughter Harriet died of typhoid. Arrived in Australia 6 Nov 1838.


David, Emma and children Emma, Edward, David, William and Robert emigrated onboard the "maitland", leaving from Gravesend, England. On the arrival in Watson Bay, 6th nov 1838 the ship, crew and passangers were ordered into quarantine. the sick at spring cove and the healthy in tents on the heights above manly cove until clearance was given. After clearance David and family travelled to the parramatta area, found work in the timber industry, then moved on to field of mars where they squatted in 1840 on unsurveyed land. In 1858, David became the legal owner of his property. The land that david owned and worked as an orchard is now west epping area near the cnr of midson and ray street, west epping and where the epping bowling club is today.
