About David Thompson

GEDCOM Note

From Ancestral File (TM), data as of 2 January 1996. This person's information was combined while in Ancestral File. The following submitters of the information may or may not agree with the combining of the information: MAXINE TYLER/CONSTABLE/ (2063536) RODNEY G./JENSEN/ (2198802) ROSEMARY STEPHENS/SCHOLES/ (2207905) CARMEN L./HALE/ (2210973) RALPH LITTLEFIELD/ALBISTON/ (2250027) LISA DAWN/POULSON/ (2258550) THOMAS C HATCH & MARSHA L/HATCH/ (2663530) MARY ANNE/SIBLEY/ (2667595) MICHAEL/BIERWAG/ (2679851) SOURCE Birth Date: The "Messenger and Advocate" published in 1836 states that David Thompson of Sringfield, Pennsylvania, Died February 21,1836 age , 63 years old. Subtracting 63 from 1836 would put David's birth date about 1773. Marriage: Tyler family records show his wife to be Betsey Tyler. Death Date: "Messenger and Advocate" as indicated under birth date. From Census and other records we find David and his family first in Herkimer County, New York prior to 1800. It is believed that he moved to Onadoga Co. New York and then a little later moved to Cayuga County, New York in 1802-1803. They apperently lived there and had the rest of their children and in about 1823-1824 moved to Erie County, Penn. with relatives. The book "Rediscovering History, Mormans in Erie County, Pennsylvania 1832-1833" by Cheryl Harmon Bean and Pamela Call Johnson. !NOTES Much of the information on this family came from information given to Thompson family genealogist John Thompson when he made a trip back east and visited with descendants of Medad Thompson. The names of the children came from a deed written when Betsey sold the family farm after David's death. Each child and thier spouse signed the deed or made thier mark. It is not known where David came from or who his parents were. The only lead we have is from genealogist Byron O. Smith, who researched the Edmund Thompson line, and indicated that David came from Long Island, New York. We assume he is buried in Erie County Penn. but have no evidence. David Thompson (~1773-1836)

The birth place and exact date of David Thompson's birth or his parents have never been satisfactorily documented. Unfortunately, he is living when we first find evidence of his family (and may have been born in) the Mohawk River valley of New York which was fought over several times by the American "Patriots" and the British "Loyalists" and their Iroquois allies. ln the process, a lot of records were destroyed as well as lives lost.

After the Revolutionary War, the Iroquois are defeated and can no longer stop west ward expansion. Most of these new pioneers came from mainly New England states and the frontiers of New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts.. These new comers take over property left vacant be "Loyalists" that went to Canada, of "Patriots" who were either killed or driven off their land and vast new acres available from vacating Iroquois (most of whom went to Canada). This whole process brings in a lot of people from a lot of different areas and its hard to know where David and his family come from. There is some reported evidence that David Thompson was born on Long Island; but this has never been confirmed. [1]

Others put him and his parents as being born in Sempronius NY--a town that didn't exist on land that was occupied by the Iroquois until they left to go to Canada or entered reservations (they lost) after the Revolutionary war ended in 1783 . Sempronious (and about 27 other townships in New York comprising about 1.75 million acres) was a so-called bounty land town set up to pay Revolutionary War soldiers primarily from New York. As an incentive to enlist the state governments offered a bonus of free land [500 acres in NY + 100 acres guaranteed by the Federal government] to be distributed after the war. Making treaties, buying, surveying and working out the details took several years to get the townships established. Unfortunately, many soldiers and officers often sold their bounty land claims for whatever they could get for it and went on with their lives. The people who eventually ended up living in these towns were often the purchasers of these bounties and not the soldiers to which they originally were given. Sempronius came into existence sometimes around 1793; so neither David or his parents could have lived there before that time. There is good evidence that David did live in Sempronius after 1800 as several of his children are recorded as being born there. There is a Thomas Thompson assigned to tract 6 in Sempronius, but whether this has anything to do with David is unknown. [2]

Its believed that he married Betsey Tyler sometime in the 1790s as Medad is born in March 1800 in Herkimer, Herkimer, NY. David's age can be guessed at [and it really is a guess] by noting that his wife was b 17 Dec 1776 and men are often a couple of years older putting his birth somewhere around 1773.

There is no David Thompson on the 1790 census that can unambiguously be assigned to "our" David Thompson. He was probably still living at home if he was really born in 1773 as he would only be 17. The first documented evidence we have is the 1800 census which shows a David Thompson with one boy and one girl under 10 and a male in the family [David] in 26-45 age range and one woman [Betsey] in the 16-26 category. Some of Betsey(Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Ebenezer, Moses, Job, Laurence) Tyler's family (originally from Boxford, Mass.) are also in the Herkimer area by 1800 which explains how she may have met David.

Starting in about 1820 the whole area he has been living in is "suddenly" altered by the Erie Canal that runs up the Mohawk river valley and across upstate New York and was completed in 1825. The canal links the waters of Lake Erie and hence most of territory around the Great Lakes in the west to the Hudson River and New York City in the east. Suddenly transport for western farm products is much cheaper and demand surges. New York booms as the center for most western trade.

David was working his way west as he lived his last years in Springfield, Erie, PA--right on Lake Erie and the Ohio border. [There is another Springfield in PA to confuse the unwary] This is the same area Joseph Smith was getting the LDS church started and they may well have met.

The oldest surviving record [3] we know of about David Thompson is the deed that the whole surviving David Thompson family , with spouses, witnessed in Springfield, Erie PA in 1837--to wit:

Deed - Estate of David Thompson to Oliver Alford
