Notes for David b Marcus (Marcus) Vos

1783 initiator of the jewish cemetery of Oudenbosch

Notes for Leentje/Helena b David (Spouse 1)

[NB: No complete certainty about this lineage. She might well be a sister of Lena Hartog, d. 19.8.1830, age 83, born in Oisterwijk, daughter of David Hartog & NN and widow of Elias Mozes Cohen -- The fact that they both are named Lena/Helena may not mean that they have the same Hebrew name]

GEDCOM Note

David Marcus Vos (ca. 1744 - 19-09-1820 Arnhem) and Helena (Leentje) David Hartog (about 1752 Oisterwijk - 25-04-1833 Arnhem). This couple had 8 children, the oldest two of whom were born in Oudenbosch (where David Marcus Vos was one of the founders of the Jewish cemetery) and the other children in Arnhem. Most children used the surname "Marcus Vos". David was a butcher by profession in the Koningstraat in Arnhem, the Dutch language was not powerful (according to his will) and could only write and read Yiddish.

The Jewish butcher David Marcus took the surname Vos in Arnhem in 1812 for him and his children: Salomon, Antje, Jacob, Liepman, Caatje, Sophia, Matje, Billeke (Betje). He is married to Helena (Leentje) Hartog from Oisterwijk. David Marcus founded the Jewish cemetery in Oudenbosch in 1783. In Oudenbosch their first two children are born: Salomon in 1782 and Antje about 1783. Somewhere between 1783 and 1785 the whole family moved to Arnhem. In the death certificate of David Marcus Vos (19 September 1820 Arnhem, age 76) his parents are unfortunately not mentioned (despite the fact that his death was indicated by his son Jacob). In the book "Die familie Gomperz" by David Kaufman and Max Freudenthal 1907, the family branch "Gomperz in Amsterdam" mentions: In Oudenbosch, David Marcus Voss, one of the Erben des viel umstrittenen Nachlasses (inheritance) Jacb Cleves (= Jacob Gomperz Cleve). From the context I deduce that David Marcus is an heir in male line of Jacob Gomperz Cleve. This Jacob Gomperz will die in Cleve on 28-03-1743 and will leave a huge amount of money for decades to which various heirs carry out trials. Jacob Gomperz Cleve marries Simelie and as far as we know she gets the following children: 1. Salman 2. Baer 3. Ruben 4. Bendix 5. Miriam x Mose Heilbut 6. Gull x Philipp Bendix Gomperz 7. Jachet x Pair Gumpel 8. Hitzle x Loeb Isaak Goldschmidt. 9. Philip Jakob Gomperz (= Josua Feibelman) ca. 1680-1738 x Schoenele Salman Drumms Children: a. Salman x Serchen b. Mirjam c. Baer Clee d. Bela e. Gumple f. Herz g. Sara h. Mordechai Gumpel = Marcus Gumpel Cleve (ca. 1700/1710) x Siese Benedict (Nijmegen): children: Meir, Salman and Abraham. Philip Jakob Gomperz and his son Mordechai Gumpel were prominent people in the Amsterdam Jewish community. In terms of time and names, David Marcus Vos could be a son of Marcus Gumpel Cleve, but evidence for that has not yet been found. ReplyBas de Vries - Oct 15, 2011 at 3:49 PM

If you take the traditional naming into account, the grandfather of David Marcus probably had the name Salomonhttps://www.stamboomforum.nl/familienamen/2/34133/0/%20Gezocht_ouders_david_marcus_vos_ca_17441820
