"Major Davey" - In the early 1840s an "M" followed his name and was used to designate him as a miller. In 1842, he bought his father Preacher Abraham Zook's Mill and with the help of his sons operated profitably for several decades. In 1854, he moved off the family farm to the "White Oak Manor" purchased from William W Wilson, a major in the army who was forced to sell because of bankruptcy. - An assessment for a special income tax during the Civil War showed only two Mifflin County farmers with more income in 1863 than his. - He was best known for his hunting prowess. Year after year local newspaper reporters chronicled his extraordinary feats. - His sons are referred to as "the Major's Nine Stalwart Sons" - "thirteen children are left to mourn the death of this aged father" - On the 25th of March, 1892, in Menno Twp., Mifflin Co., Pa., David M. Zook, aged 82 years, 5 months and 26 days. Thirteen children are left to mourn the death of this aged father, and with them a large circle of friends and the church of which he was a highly esteemed member.
