About Davis Burrus

Davis (C.D.) Burrus, 80, passed away August 4, 2006 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. The son of John R. and Bernice (Crandall) Burrus he was born February 24, 1926 at Bible Grove, MO.

On December 8, 1948 he was united in marriage to Betty Leckbee who preceded him in death. To this union two children were born. On April 15, 1995 he was married to Thresa Bowen who survives.

Also surviving is one daughter Vicki Clark and her husband Lester of Downing, MO; one son Dave M. Burrus and his wife Melinda of Carlton, WA; six grandchildren: Dana Poole of Kirksville, MO, Rob Poole and his wife Marti of LaPlata, MO, Jeremy Burrus of Costa Mesa, CA, Amanda Pulley and her husband Jeff of Reno, NV, Justin Burrus and his wife Britta of Baring, MO and Jacob Burrus of San Diego, CA; four great-grandchildren Robert Poole of Kirksville, MO, Austin and Elizabeth Poole of LaPlata, MO, Branton Andriesen of Baring, MO; two step-sons Shannan Bowen and Dustin Bowen and his wife Heather of Queen City, MO and one step-granddaughter Chyanne Bowen of Kirksville, MO.

Davis began farming in the Bible Grove community in his teens due to the loss of his father at an early age. He graduated from Bible Grove High School in 1943. After serving fifteen months in the United States Army in Japan he returned to farming for himself in the Bible Grove area and extended into several surrounding counties, Iowa, and Texas.

For several years he was a partner in the Burrus and Troutman Livestock Sales traveling extensively buying cattle, sheep, and hogs. During this time he owned and flew his own plane.

In later years he enjoyed the challenge of buying, leasing, and selling farmland.

His hobbies included hunting, especially quail and pheasant, fishing, especially crappie, and playing cards. He enjoyed going to the area casinos, Las Vegas, and playing cards with friends at Downing.

Being adventuresome and a lover of water, he purchased a fishing boat at San Diego, CA and moved it up the coast to Everett, WA without prior sailing experience. He then took it to Anchorage, AK and back to Everett. He also cruised the entire Mississippi River, across the Gulf of Mexico and back.

The Family has suggested memorials to the Children's Leukemia (Austin Poole fund).

Funeral Services were held August 6, 2006 at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, with Rev. Charles Hammack officiating.

Pallbearers were Justin Burrus, Rob Poole, Jeremy Burrus, Jeff Pulley, Jacob Burrus and Kyle Covalt. Military Graveside Services were provided by the Wallace W. Gillespie V.F.W. Post #4958, Memphis, MO. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO.
