<MISS DAWN ADDAMS>

Dawn Addams, the film actress, died on May 7 at the age of 54, after a long battle against cancer.

The highlight of a career which declined after a promising start was to be chosen by Charles Chaplin as his leading lady for "A King in New York" in 1957. She gave an attractive performance but the film was poorly received and thereafter she was in mainly routine pictures, alternating between Britain and the Continent.

She was born in Felixstowe, Suffolk, on September 21, 1930, and spent part of her early life in India and South Africa before studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. During 1949 she had two small parts on the West End stage.

At the age of 20 she went to Hollywood, where she was put under contract to MGM. Her first substantial role was in the comedy, "The Moon is Blue", opposite David Niven. She was later in "The Robe" and "Khyber Patrol."

In the mid 1950s she returned to Europe, but apart from "A King in New York" her only film for a leading director was Fritz Lang's "The 1,000 Eyes of Dr Mabuse" made in Germany in 1960. In Britain she became mainly associated with horror films, including "The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll", "The Vampire Lovers", and "Vault of Horror."

During the 1970s she made irregular appearances on television, where she was best known for the comedy series, "Father, Dear Father."

Her first marriage, to the Italian Prince Massimo, was dogged by acrimonious disputes over the custody of their son, Stefano. They parted after four years and divorced in 1971.

Three years later she married James White, a 65-year-old retired businessman, who survives her.
