About Dea. Isaac Appleton
He came to New Ipswich about 1750, and settled upon one of the 24 lots owned by his father (N. D., 41,) building his house near the southeast corner of the lot, upon the west side of the old "country road" not far from the point where the turnpike was to intersect it fifty years later. But in 1756 he removed a short distance farther up the country road and there built the house which still bears over its entrance the date of its erection, and which was to be his home for half a century, during which he was a power in the town for all that tended to true prosperity. He held the office of town clerk and of selectman each for several years and was a deacon for thirty years. He responded to the call to arms from Concord, and also served under Capt. Smith.
