About Deac. Timothy Manning

Timothy Manning was born on March 4, 1691/2 in Billerica, Massachusetts. He was the son of Samuel and Abigail/Abiel (Wight) Manning. He was a housewright and farmer.

Adult Life

Timothy first settled in Billerica and was there from 1712 to at least 1717. In 1717, he became one of the first 30 families to whom 4,000 acres of land were granted at Sutton, Massachusetts by the General Court. He moved there by 1720 and in 1721 became Sutton's tithingman and was selected by vote to speak at the General Court. He was also selected by vote in 1723 to speak at the General Court. In 1723, he was part of a committee to "seat the meeting house," which apparently referred to the formal dividing up and assigning of the pews at the meetinghouse.

Within the next year, he moved to Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut, where he would spend the rest of his life. He was elected highway surveyor there in 1726 and tithingman in 1728 and 1729.

For church membership, he "owned the covenant" at Reading on July 6, 1707. He was one of the founders of the church at Sutton in 1720 and was chosen "monitor" and deacon that same year. In 1727, he and his wife became members of the Woodstock church.

Family with Susanna

On December 10, 1712, he married his first wife, Susanna Boutwell, at Reading, Massachusetts. She died on August 20, 1733. Together, they had:

  • Susanna (1): b. July 19, 1715 at Reading - d. August 14, 1715
  • Susanna (2): b. August 5, 1717 at Reading
  • Timothy: b. February 4, 1720 at Sutton - d April 4, 1734
  • John: b. May 3,1722 May 3 at Sutton - d. May 2, 1734
  • Samuel: b. August 15, 1724 at Woodstock - last record shows living on July 8, 1735
  • Joseph: b. March 9, 1728 9 at Woodstock
  • Hannah: b. February 2, 1731 at Woodstock - d, March 17, 1733/4

Family with Margaret

On March 20, 1734, Timothy married Margaret Holmes at Woodstock. Together, they had:

  • Hannah: b. February 22, 1734/5 - d. March 27, 1735

Death & Will

Timothy died in Woodstock on October 27, 1735 "after long weakness." He, his first wife, and several children are buried at the Woodstock Hill Cemetery; their stones were already deteriorating by the late 1800s. His stone reads:

Here lies buried the body - of Deacon Timothy Manning - aged 43 years deceased - october the 27 - 1735

His will was recorded on July 8, 1735 at Worcester, Massachusetts. He gave 10 shillings each to his three living children -- Samuel, Joseph. and Susanna -- but made provision for the possible birth of another. He gave to his wife the residue of his estate, with the condition that "[i]f it pleases God she shall have Issue of her Body," anything she might leave at her death was to go to that child, "but if it please God she have no child," one half of her estate was to descend to the three children above named and she had liberty to dispose of the other half as she saw fit.

It does not appear that a child was born; financially, it mattered little. The inventory was only £98.03.4, and the latest paper on record (dated November 24, 1735) was signed by his widow/executrix, who expressed fear that the estate would prove insufficient to pay Deacon Manning's debts and sickness and funeral charges.
