The Chipman Family, A Geneology of the Chipmans in America, 1631-1920

Samuel Chipman, first son of John Chipman and Hope Howland, was born at Barnstable, Massachusetts 15 Apr 1661; and died in 1723. He lived in Barnstable, employed in its local affairs, and was highly regarded by its citizens. Samuel built, on his father's homestead near the Custom House, the "Chipman Tavern" which continued in his family line until 1830. The tavern itself burned to the ground sometime before 1805, and only the huge chimney and stone cupboard remained. They were incorporated into the Cape Cod cottage still standing on the site of the tavern. As of 1970, the cottage was owned and occupied by a Miss Elizabeth D. Hamblin, the great-granddaughter of William Chipman (born 1806 to John Chipman and Joanna (Howland) Chipman). Samuel became a member of the church 16 Aug 1691 and was ordained a deacon 1 Sep 1706.[1]
