About Deborah Anne Ridgely

All that is known of her death is that it was before 1752.


Known as "widow Ridgely" c. 1706. Mentioned, along with two named sons (and one unnamed child), in her father's will, 1714.


Deborah was born in about 1685 at “ Hockley-In-Ye-Hole”, Anne Arundel Co., Maryland. When Deborah was 12 years old she lost her sight from small pox. She was a wonderful housekeeper and so acute were her senses of hearing and feeling that she is said to have suffered no inconvenience from her misfortune. Her charms are attested by the fact that she was wooed and married by two of the handsomest men of the Colony. She married first, Charles Ridgely I (1680-17050. Deborah married secondly Richard Clagett, Sr., of “Croome” (1681-1752). Deborah died in 1752 in Prince George’s Co., Maryland, and was buried at " Croome", Prince George's Co., Maryland.

Deborah married first, Charles Ridgely I "Charles The Planter" (1680-1705) and had the following children:

1. Col. Charles Ridgely II "Charles The Merchant" b. 1702 Prince George's Co., MD. d. 1772 m.1) Rachel Howard (ca. 1696-1750). m.2) Lydia (Warfield) Stringer, widow of Dr. Samuel Stringer (d. 1747).

2. William Ridgely, Sr. b. 1703 Anne Arundel Co., MD. d. 1755 White Claret, Anne Arundel Co., MD. m. Elizabeth Duvall (1723-1805).

Deborah married second, Richard Clagett, Sr., "of Croome" (1681-1752).
