Delila Smith Wingfield was born December 27, 1819 in Virginia Her parents were: Christina "Tenah" Smith ( 1796-1862 ) and William Abshire, the Uncle of Christina ( 1800-1850 ). They never married. .Her mother's parents were: Philemon Smith ( 1756-1819 ) and Nancy Abshire ( 1777-1837 ). Her father's parents were: John Abshire ( 1769-1821 ) and Elizabeth Poteet (1774-1841) She had one brother: Mark Smith ( 1816-1893 ), he died in Colorado. Mark Smith married Lucy Johnson ( 1813-1906 ). They had 13 living children.

She married Oliver Pickney Wingfield on April 3, 1843 in Franklin, Virginia. To this union they had nine children: William L. Wingfield (1843-?), Francis 'Frank' Marion Wingfield (1846-1916), John A. Wingfield (1848-?), Nancy M. Wingfield Snyder (1849-1916), James F. Wingfield (1852-?), Verinda Melissa 'Sarah' Wingfield Townsend (1855-1898), Ann E. Wingfield (1857-?), Susan 'Lottie' Wingfield (1857-?), and Perry Wyatt Wingfield (1860-?).
Her husband died during the Civil War in 1862. She eventually moved to Indiana and lived with family. She died at the home of her daughter Nannie Synder in Peru, Miami County, Indiana.
