Biography

Dempsey Barnes was born about 1744 in the Bertie Precinct of Northampton County, North Carolina, and died between May 28, 1807 and and 25 August 1807, when his Will was proved. He was the son of Joseph Barnes and Elizabeth Whitley.

He married Sarah on 11 April 1767. She was born about 1744. Perhaps she was the daughter of John Dew, III & Elizabeth ‘Eleanor’ Dew, but evidence is needed.

25 Mar 1807 is the date of his will which was proven 25 Aug 1807. The previous session of Court was held May 25-28, 1807 so he probably died after it. About June 1807 is an estimate.

Joseph Barnes was not named in the 1762 will of Edward Barnes, of Edgecombe County, but he named grandsons, Jacob Barnes and Michael Barnes.
