About Denise Darlene Pickle
Denise spent four years in the Army and at the time of her murder was an Army Reserve medic. She lived with her mother and 17 month old daughter in Virginia Beach. She was at the Veterans Administration Center Hospital in Hampton for monthly training when she was attacked in a stairwell by Philip Rodney Walker, a domiciliary resident of the hospital diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic.
Walker's reasoning was that he hoped to be executed after the murder. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a life term at a federal psychiatric facility. On 24 Jan 1987, he hanged himself in prison.
