About Denys Archibald Rowan-Hamilton, MVO, DL

Lt.-Col. Denys Archibald Rowan-Hamilton was born on 26 April 1921. He is the son of Brigadier Gawain Basil Rowan-Hamilton and Phyllis Frances Blackburn. He married Wanda Annette Warburton, daughter of Lt.-Col. Rupert Warburton, on 16 November 1961.

He was educated at Wellington College, Wellington, Berkshire, England. He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England. He fought in the Second World War. He was appointed Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) in 1947.1 He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Southern Rhodesia in 1947. He was educated in 1952 at Staff College, Canada. He gained the rank of Major in 1953 in the 29th British Infantry Brigade, Korea. He was Military Secretary to West Africa. He was 2nd in command of the 1st Black Watch between 1957 and 1959. He was commander of the 45th Black Watch between 1960 and 1963. He was Defense Attache to the British Embassy, Damascus and Beirut between 1964 and 1967. He retired from the military in 1967, with the rank of Lieutenant, late of the The Black Watch. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of County Down. He held the office of High Sheriff of County Down in 1975.
