Das Venter (1970 – 2014)

Brief overview:

Derek (44) was shot dead on 14th March 2014, when four black males, who spoke both Afrikaans and Tswhana invaded his home. They broke through a sliding door. Derek, an ex-wrestler, tried to fight off one of the attackers, and was shot four times, one gunshot in the throat and three into his torso.

Family spokesman Natie Verwey said the attackers locked up Venter's three children - 3, 7 and 10 - in a bedroom, and demanded money from his wife, Annarie. As she only had R200, they beat her up.

Their neighbour, André van Heerden, a member of the Cullinan CPF, heard the shots being fired drove to the house. The attackers hid, then ran away when he was near the house.

Two handguns, a pistol and a revolver, very likely stolen in a previous raid, were used to shoot Derek.

The attackers stole only cellphones and the R200 in cash.

Derek managed to untie Annarie's feet, then he died.

The case still not solved.
