D. (Dewitt) served in the Union Army in the Civil War, from July 6, 1863 to May 15, 1864 at Stanton Virginia, Co. 1st New York Cavalry, serving from Chemung Co., New York. He kept his old Civil War musket and hung it on the wall wherever he lived. He also had a long barreled cavalry pistol. Uncle Will Henderson had the the last anyone knew. D, Dewitt, suffered a disability, chronic bronchitis, caused from exposure but could not get statements proving his eligibility for a pension. He could neither read nor write. D married Amerilla Buchanan Clark Barrett, a widow with 2 children.
