About Lady Diana Skipwith

Diana Skipwith was the fifth child and second daughter of Sir Henry Skipwith and his first wife Amy Kempe.

Although Diana may have been addressed as 'Lady Diana' in America, this was only a courtesy title. The children of Knights did not inherit any title and, with the exception of the eldest son, or eldest surviving son, the children of Baronets also did not inherit any title.

Most of the information about Diana and Edward Dale's family came from several sources: "the Maiden Family of Virginia and Allied Families, 1623-1991" by Sarah Finch Maiden Rollins who copied most of the information from the book "The Descendants of Capt. Thomas Carter of "Barford", Lancaster County, Virginia, (1912)", Joseph Lyon Miller. Other sources include the LDS, Family History Center and computer genealogy.

Diana came to Virginia around 1652-1655 with her younger brother Graye/Grey. Legal documents in Lancaster County, Virginia, testify to her presence there in 1655. There is no record of Diana having married Edward Dale in England. Edward Dale is said to have had three children, but whether Diana was the mother of all three has been disputed. The available documentary evidence can be used to support arguments either way and hinge on the question of whether Diana was referred to as 'Skipwith' both before (as one would expect) and after her marriage to Edward Dale. Given the paucity of documentary evidence, it seems unlikely that, in spite of what some may claim, the issue will ever be settled beyond all reasonable doubt. Inevitably this means that genealogists, especially those who claim to be descended in some way, may choose their preferred option and record it as fact.

Diana would appear to have died after Edward, since in his epitaph (recorded in the Carter Prayer Book) it mentions Diana as "left a little while to Mourne him". Diana and Edward were probably buried in the churchyard of the nearby Church of England they attended, St. Mary's White Chapel. The tomb has not been located. Diana was about seventy years old when her husband died.

Hi Group:

Since I have a copy of the 1674 deed in which Diana Skipwith refers to Daniel Harrison as her son in law, I thought that it would be of interest to the group to see the exact wording of this deed. This deed was obtained by me at the Lancaster County, VA courthouse, and the photocopy was made by the Clerk of the Court. I have left blank spaces for the words that I could not make out. The spelling is exactly as it is written in the deed.

This deed appears in Lancaster County, VA Deed Book 4, page 201- 202, and reads as follows:
