About Dick Chew
Second World War Amy Service: Dick served in one of the Australian Army Independent Companies in the Pacific Islands during World War II. These Companies later became known as "Commando" units.
A family story relates to the time that Dick and his younger brother Cliff were in military training on the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland. Their unit was deployed in an area of long grass, and after dark were sleeping in their positions when an army truck drove through their location, running over Dick's head while he slept. He was apparently unhurt in the incident, thereby enhancing his formidable reputation for toughness.
