Dirk Human (1969 – 2010)

Brief overview:

Dirk (41), a Construction Entrepreneur, was hacked with a panga (bush knife) before he was executed with one shot to his temple. Dirk, his wife Yolanda, eight year-old son Dirk Jnr, and two year-old son Jake lived on a rented Boschkop, outside Pretoria, smallholding.

In Wednesday's attack, at least three men made their way into Human's home after barricading the family's domestic worker, Lettie Lebina, inside her cottage. The attackers, who were armed with knives and guns, attacked Human as he stood in their en-suite bathroom, preparing for the day. Destroyed furniture, wall hangings, broken photographs and blood stains bore testimony to how Human fought off his killers in his bedroom where Jake was asleep in a corner in his camping cot, until he was eventually overpowered.

It is believed he was repeatedly hacked on the head. Once subdued, his killers tied his hands with shoelaces before they shot him in the right temple. The critically injured Human, who died while his wife prayed over him as paramedics tried to resuscitate him, was found after Lebina broke her bedroom window and screamed for help.

Yolanda said it was by the grace of God that Jake had escaped unharmed. "It is clear Dirk was trying to get them out of the room." Jake was standing in his cot quietly watching paramedics trying to save his father's life. A traumatised Lebina said she had been unable to stop the attack. "I heard a noise and tried to get out, but couldn't. I tried, but all I could do was listen. There was so much noise. Dirk was shouting shoot, shoot and then it went quiet."

  • The attack, which left one of the killers wounded, came 24 hours after 250 Boschkop residents embarked on a massive anti-crime patrol in the area. It occurred moments after Yolanda left their house to drop off Dirk Jnr at school on her way to work, and came three weeks after an attempted burglary at their home. Wednesday's was the second attack in the area since January when architect Johan Swart escaped with his life when he was shot on his smallholding in an armed robbery. Yolanda said her husband had been unable to report the earlier attempted burglary because the Boschkop police station, situated less than 300m from their smallholding, was apparently closed for the night.
