  • Parents: Revd Edward Battie (1664?–1714), rector of Modbury, Devon, and his wife, Catherine, was baptized in Modbury on 1 September 1703
  • Wife: a daughter of Barnham Goode
  • Children: Anne (d. 1830), who married Sir George Young; and Catherine and Philadelphia, who both married gentlemen.
  • Career: found St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics, London, in 1751. He was the first teacher of the subject of insanity in England, and his teachings helped make the treatment of insanity respectable.
