Domenico Basso

Accident No. 13. - February 18th. Dominick Basso lost his life by falling down No. 3 shaft, from the 4th level to the bottom, a distance of 30 feet.

This accident occured at the Arcadian Mine.

An inquest was held before Justice Fisher.

Joseph Basso, brother of deceased, testified: “I was working with Dominick last night, landing the bucket in the 4th level No. 3 shaft. When the bucket came up my brother landed it and in pushing it back into the shaft, the bolt of the bucket caught the sleeve of his coat, pulling him into the shaft. I worked eight months in No. 3 shaft. My brother has landed the bucket ever since the shaft started from surface. We always landed the bucket the same way as we did last night. I went down the shaft and found my brother alive. I put him into the skip and took him to the surface, and he died when we got there.”

Verdict of the jury: “We find that Dominick Basso came to his death on the 28th day of February, 1899, by accidentally falling into No. 3 shaft at the 4th level, Arcadian Mine, while in the act of pushing the bucket into the shaft."
