Domenico Roffina

Accident No. 19. - June 14th. A fatal accident occurred at the Arcadian Mine, caused by the breaking of a wire rope. Dominick Boffino was riding down in the skip, from the 4th to the 5th level, when down about 50 feet, the rope broke, letting him down to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of about fifty feet. His back, arm and leg were broken, and he expired about fifteen minutes after the accident.

An inquest was held before Justice fisher at the mine office.

Four witnesses; Herman Miller, engineer, Felix Rolando, John Fontane and John Rocci testified at the inquest as follows:

“When the deceased went into the skip, he told the engineer, to lower slowly, which was done. About fifty feet down, the rope broke, letting the skip and Boffino down to the bottom of the shaft. No defect was seen in the rope.”

Strict orders had been given that no one should be allowed to ride in the skip, and Boffino himself would not allow anyone else to ride. He, being the boss in that shaft, took advantage of his position, disobeyed orders and in so doing, lost his life.

The jury, after listening to the testimony, returned the following verdict: “We, the jury, upon our oaths do say, that the deceased, Dominick Boffino came to his death on the 14th day of June, A. D. 1899, between the 4th and 5th levels of the Arcadian Mine, while riding a skip, through an unforeseen accident, caused by the breaking of the wire rope; we also examined the rope and found it in good condition."
