About Dominic Flacco

Grandpop Dominic came over to the US to be a coal miner. He was mining coal in Cascade, West Virginia when Mafia was born in 1911. He later was disabled due to Black Lung disease, and, when he moved to Camden, was prety much unable to work outside the home.

(Black lung disease, also known as coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), is caused by long exposure to coal dust. It is a common affliction of coal miners and others who work with coal, similar to both silicosis from inhaling silica dust, and to the long-term effects of tobacco smoking. Inhaled coal dust progressively builds up in the lungs and is unable to be removed by the body; that leads to inflammation, fibrosis, and in the worst case, necrosis.)

He and grandpop Ettore enjoyed playing cards together, but Great Grandpop Dominic violently opposed Grandpop Ettore and Grandmom Malfia'd decision to get married, thus forcing them to elope to Elkton, Maryland, which was a popular wedding spot, as there was no waiting period to marry.

(Elkton was once known as the "Gretna Green of the West" because of its popularity as a place for eloping couples to marry until a state law was passed in 1938 requiring a 48-hour waiting period. Still, the town maintains several wedding chapels.)

According to Grandmom, Grandpop Ettore was a fairly good cook. After Grandmom and Grandpop returned from Elkton, Grandpop Dominic eventually apologized to the happy couple and accepted Grandpop Ettore into the family.
