About Don Charles Arnold
Don Arnold was born in McCallsburg, IA at the Charles Christian Farm just 1 mile west of McCallsburg, on the kitchen table (as I have been told). Don grew up in McCallsburg, until the family moved out to Washington State, close to Sam & Julia Arnold. They later returned to McCallsburg where Don has lived except for a short time. Don & Betty lived in Radcliffe, IA and in Long Beach, CA while Don was in the service. He has lived at 105 S. 1st street in McCallsburg for some 43 years now. Don quit school in 8th grade in order to go to work driving a truck for his dad Cleo, hauling rock from the gravel pit. He later joined the Navy and served during the Korean conflict. While on a ship he had some steel drop on him and break his legs. He was in a cast in the Naval hospital for some 9 months, getting it healed due to complications. It has caused him problems over the years needless to say. After his enlistment in the Navy was over, he came back to Iowa and worked at the Canning Factory in Roland for a while plus a couple other odd jobs before getting hired on at the Farmers Coop in McCallsburg. He worked there for some 30+ years before having to retire due to his leg & knee problems. Don lost his wife Betty on January 14, 2000. He still misses her so today, and always will. They were together for 47 years.
