About Donald Richard Abernathy

"Roughhouse" his nick name which when I asked my aunt Cassie about the title she let me know that dad was the person that would take on a bigger guy just to help an "under dog" he was what they call an "equalizer" if a person was giving the little guy trouble and dad was around he would help make things a little better for the little guy if it was an unfair fight dad would make or help to make it fair. I had never heard that about my dad until I was talking to my aunt after dad had "passed on" which seems to be a lot of what I have learned about members of the family. Many things seem to be made known after people have left us. Dad was a very strong swimmer and diver and he would do dives that had a combination of twists and moves which I couldn't imagine doing or even trying when I could dive. I t was amazing and dad would do those dives whenever there was a board to use until one day we were at the camp site where their trailer was and the dive that he would usually do looked like dad had twisted wrong. I could tell that it must have hurt dad because instead of doing more dives and swimming in the water he struggled out of the pool and went to a lounge chair. I never saw dad do that dive after that day. I talked to Pauline and she saw dad save a drowning man at a later date at the camp site. I believe that without my dad being in the right place at a certain time that several people might have lost their life to "unforgiving waters". Father's respect and knowledge of the waters was added to my life and several drownings were prevented with what I learned from dad. The years are stacking with memories to my life and the blessings of my life usually bring tears to my eyes whenever I remember all I owe my father.
