Donald Neil Campbell

About Campbell, Donald Neil Donald Neil Campbell was born at Leven Road, Kinlochleven, Argyll on 7 October 1915, the elder son of Neil & Helen Campbell. He left school in 1930 & commenced work as a clerk in the offices of the British Aluminium Company in Kinlochleven. He volunteered for service in WW2 & served in the Oxford Yeomanry Anti Tank Regiment of the Royal Artillery where he took part in the whole campaign with action in France, Belgium, Holland and was in Germany at the release of Belsen Concentration Camp, a subject which he refused to discuss with any of us as he was so repulsed by what he saw there. Before being posted to Europe he spent some time with his regiment in Peterhead. His childhood sweetheart (Mum) was working as a nurse in a hospital in that area too, so on 19 December they were married at Peterhead Parish Church in Aberdeenshire. Donald returned home in 1946 & resumed his employment with B A Co and for many years he was also registrar of Births, Marriages & Deaths in the village & was also a voluntary staff member of the local library. However, the war had taken its toll on Donald's health with the result that he was hospitalised several times with stomach & heart problems & died in Glencoe Hospital on 31 July 1960 after suffering a coronary thrombosis leaving behind his wife Margaret & daughters, Margaret (15) and Cheryl (10).
