He was the youngest of eight children of John MacRae (b. 1778) and Margaret MacIver (b. 1779). He married Kirsty MacIver (b. 1829) on December 18, 1848 in Garrabost, Isleof Lewis, Scotland. The couple had eight children. Donald MacRae was a fisherman by trade. He died in 1907.

Addendum by Donald Ban MacRae's great-great-grandson:
"Ban" (as he was known in Scotstown, Quebec) brought his family to Canada in the 1850's. They settled, for generations, in and around that small community of Scottish ex-pats. I use a kitchen table he made as my desk. I spend my childhood summers playing in a barn he built. He isburied with his wife (Ann MacKenzie) and several generations of his descendants in a very pretty cematary in Lingwick, Quebec (the next town over).
