About Dorathea Scheidemantel

I believe she was born 1851 not 1852. John's first wife was born in 1844.

Mrs. Dorathea Koppitz Scheidemantel (same last name) was the second wife of John S. Scheidemantel. She was affectionately known as "Grossie" and was born on August 16, 1851. Dorathea and John were married on Sept. 11, 1906, "Grossie" being 55 years of age at the time and had been a widow for 18 years., John was 63 years of age and had been a widower for a little less than two years.

Michael Scheidemantel , Dorathea's first husband , was not related to John Scheidemantel. Michael married Dorathea Koppits on Feb. 18, 1868, and they became parents of 8 children. Michael and Dorathea owned and operated the Scheidemantel Saloon at 2630 Carson Street , in the South side of Pittsburgh.

Michael died on March 5, 1888 and "Grossie" continued to run the saloon, and in 1891 Charley Scheidemantel, son of John S. Scheidemantel, applied and received a job as bartender. Later Charley married one of "Grossies's " daughters, (Margaretta Elizabeth) and for awhile managed the salon.

Sometime later, Dorathea's son-in-law Charley Scheidemante, found other employment and sometime later, "Grossie" sold the saloon and bought property on Sarah Street in Pittsburgh. Her oldest daughter, Annie, who was epileptic, was married and lived at Lucyville, about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. "Grossie" appearently made her home with her daughter and husband, Jake Reinheimer, so she could help look after their children, should Annie have a seizure. Jake Reinheimer was chief engineer for the Moose Brewery.

John S. Scheidemantel visited "Grossie" at the Reinheimer home and was welcomed as a friend and as Lizzie's (Margaretta Elizabeth) father-in-law. John seemingly made a number of future visits. "Grossie" would periodically come to Pittsburgh on business and stay over night at her Daughter Lizzie and Charley Scheidemnatel's home. On occasion, John would take advantage of these visits and also appear. On one of her visits at Lizzie's and Charley's, "Grossie" suddenly announced that John would also be there that night. The following day, she and John went into Pittsburgh and returned as husband and wife.

Following the wedding, John brought his wife to his Crescent Av. home in Ellwood City, John's children resented seeing their mother's home being taken over by a step-mother. (Emma, Ferd and Walter were still living at home and they all found other living quarters, leaving only Lewis Scheidemantel, and orphaned grandson, still at home. John and Grossie raised Lewis to maturity.

In 1919 they were forced to give up their home on Crescent Ave. due to financial problems and bought a smaller house on Franklin Ave. in Ellwood City. After making various settlements following the sale of the Crescent Av. home, only sufficient funds were left to make a down payment on the Franklin Ave. property. Grossie used some of her money she received from the sale of her property in Pittsburgh to complete the purchase and the new home was put in her name. Several of the Reinheimer children (her grand-children to her first husband) were living in Ellwood City, and frequently visited and would stay for brief periods of time with them. Later on, Carrie Reinheimer, one of these grand-children came and made her home with them, and took care of them until their death.

John S. Scheidemantel, her second husband, died on July 8, 1927, and she and her grand daughter continued to make their homes together. Dorathea Scheidemantel died on January 2, 1929 at the age of 77 years, 4 months and 17 days. She was buried in the Zimmerman Cemetary in Carrick, Pittsburgh, alongside her first husband, Michael Scheidemantel. Compiled January 17, 1966 - by H.O.R. (Harold Rogers)
